Course Profile

Course Title: Anti-Conversion Laws and Christian Mission

Course Description

This course examines the various anti-conversion laws enacted in different states of India, paying particular attention to their historical development, legal framework, and contemporary implications. Students will critically analyze the rationale, implementation, and critiques of these laws within the broader context of religious freedom and constitutional rights.

The course also explores the challenges and opportunities for Christian mission in contexts shaped by anti-conversion legislation. Special emphasis will be given to biblical perspectives on persecution, responsible Christian witness, and faithful participation in mission that respects both the law of the land and the religious and cultural sensitivities of diverse communities.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Explain the nature, purpose, and legal provisions of anti-conversion laws in India.
2. Examine the historical and political developments that have shaped anti-conversion legislation.
3. Compare anti-conversion laws across different Indian states.
4. Critically evaluate the legal, constitutional, and ethical issues surrounding anti-conversion laws.
5. Articulate Christian theological responses to anti-conversion legislation.
6. Reflect on biblical teachings concerning persecution and Christian witness.
7. Develop mission strategies that are faithful to the Christian calling while remaining sensitive to legal and social realities.

Part B: Christian Mission in the Context of Anti-Conversion Laws

1. Persecution in the Bible.
2. Different levels and forms of persecution.
3. Missional responses to persecution.
4. Contemporary case studies.

Course Requirements and Assessment

Assignment 1: Comparative Study of Anti-Conversion Laws

Compare the anti-conversion laws of any two Indian states, selecting one state from your own context. Address the following questions:

a. What reasons are given for the enactment of anti-conversion laws?

b. Which activities are identified in the legislation as constituting “inappropriate” or unlawful conversion practices?

c. What legal penalties are prescribed for violations of the law?

Assignment 2: Christian Mission and Legal Responsibility

Discuss how Christians may continue to participate in mission while respecting the laws of the land. Support your answer with two case studies and provide a theological and practical response.

इस पाठ्यक्रम में भारत के विभिन्न राज्यों में बनाए गए धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों का अध्ययन किया जाएगा। इसमें इन कानूनों के इतिहास, कानूनी ढाँचे और वर्तमान प्रभावों पर विशेष ध्यान दिया जाएगा। विद्यार्थी धार्मिक स्वतंत्रता और संवैधानिक अधिकारों के संदर्भ में इन कानूनों केकारणों, उनके लागू होने और उनकी आलोचनाओं का अध्ययन करेंगे।

यह पाठ्यक्रम उन चुनौतियों और अवसरों पर भी विचार करेगा जो धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों के बीच मसीही मिशन के सामने आते हैं। विशेषरूप से, बाइबल में उत्पीड़न के विषय, जिम्मेदार मसीही गवाही, और देश के कानूनों तथा विभिन्न समुदायों की धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक भावनाओंका सम्मान करते हुए मिशन में भाग लेने पर ध्यान दिया जाएगा।

इस पाठ्यक्रम को पूरा करने के बाद विद्यार्थी:

1. भारत में धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों की प्रकृति, उद्देश्य और कानूनी प्रावधानों को समझ सकेंगे।
2. उन ऐतिहासिक और राजनीतिक परिस्थितियों का अध्ययन कर सकेंगे जिन्होंने इन कानूनों को आकार दिया है।
3. विभिन्न राज्यों के धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों की तुलना कर सकेंगे।
4. इन कानूनों से जुड़े कानूनी, संवैधानिक और नैतिक मुद्दों का मूल्यांकन कर सकेंगे।
5. धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों के प्रति मसीही धर्मशास्त्रीय प्रतिक्रियाओं को समझ सकेंगे।
6. बाइबल में उत्पीड़न और मसीही गवाही की शिक्षाओं पर विचार कर सकेंगे।

असाइनमेंट 1: धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों का तुलनात्मक अध्ययन

किसी भी दो भारतीय राज्यों के धर्म-परिवर्तन विरोधी कानूनों की तुलना कीजिए। इनमें से एक राज्य आपके अपने राज्य का होना चाहिए।निम्नलिखित प्रश्नों के उत्तर दीजिए:

क. इन कानूनों को बनाने के पीछे क्या कारण बताए गए हैं?

ख. कानून में किन गतिविधियों को “अनुचित” या अवैध धर्म-परिवर्तन माना गया है?

ग. कानून का उल्लंघन करने पर क्या दंड दिए जाते हैं?

असाइनमेंट 2: मसीही मिशन और कानूनी जिम्मेदारी

बताइए कि मसीही लोग देश के कानूनों का सम्मान करते हुए मिशन के कार्य में कैसे भाग ले सकते हैं। अपने उत्तर को दो केस स्टडी के माध्यम सेसमझाइए तथा उसका धर्मशास्त्रीय और व्यावहारिक विश्लेषण प्रस्तुत कीजिए।
